Football Spring Thoughts

First and foremost the Chucky Mullins Courage award went to the very deserving Jeremy Garrett from Senatobia Mississippi. This is the first year the award went to a defensive player as opposed to a "defensive back". (The back seven was considered backs.)

The rest of my news came predominately from a Mon Calimari informant I had since I could unfortunately not attend the spring game. First Seth Adams is set to be the Rebels starting quarterback next fall. That's a scary thought no offense to Seth. But you hate to hear a guy who walked on from junior college is going to start at quarterback. This says even more about Brent Schaeffer than it does anything else. Well other than that Cliff Davis is not the savior we thought he might be since he quit the team after they wouldn't put him in.
According to the stats our leading receiver in the spring game was Josh Zettergren. I'd love to give you a picture but he doesn't even have a bio pick on the official site. Cordera Eason also had a big game. Glad he got to spend his freshman year on special teams. Well that and the whopping experience he got from getting 16 yards on 7 carries.

So I wouldn't expect much out of the Rebel offense with our without Schaeffer next season. The problem is at best that means our offense is just as bad as it was last year. On the other had we loose to 15 pick Patrick Willis from our defense. I for one think loosing him will be like loosing Eli from our offense in 2004. In other words be prepared for a long season that could be potentially the worst yet. Well unless Ogerzook can coach them up. Which the national media thinks his ability to do so is doubtful.

Huge Draft News

On the eve of the NFL draft I oddly have some non NFL Draft news.

Armintie Price went 3rd overall to to whatever Chicago's team is.

I have the utmost confidence she'll be an All Star in the WNBA. You could tell she was a star during her time at Ole Miss.

So I guess I care about the WNBA now? Somewhat? Okay well not really but I'm super excited for Armintie and hope she demolishes the league. And they limit all WNBA highlights on sportscenter to 30 seconds are less.

Loosing Folks

Both the Baseball and Basketball teams lost a few players in the last two weeks.

Oddly the Basketball team lost three players that are very similar. Andy Ogide, Trey Hampton , and Xavier Hansboro were all small/power forward combos. Judging by the type of team that Kennedy seems to want they didn't really fit since he like the three position to be a faster player that is more of a guard forward combo. Then the four guy he seems to like larger quick guys that can really bang for rebounds.The baseball Rebels also lost first baseman Andrew Clark who was looking like one of the freshman keepers. According to reports he sadly didn't like going to class and Bianco doesn't like putting up with players who don't go to class. After getting trouble he started getting homesick. You could tell that he was in a funk for the last couple of weeks because his numbers really started to decline. The saddest thing about this is of course loosing the Dairy Queen Classic MOP. I mean after all how cool was it to say we had the Dairy Queen MOP?


However the most devastating is loosing the best coach we had on campus Carol Ross. Carol's claiming burn out. Assistant Renee Ladner was immediately named the new head coach. Still hate to loose a coach a month after watching her take the team to the Elite Eight. The men's team or for that matter the football team or baseball team haven't made the equivalent (BCS bowl game, College World Series) in ages. But we have to thank Carol for leaving us a lot better off than when she came in to fix Ron Aldy's mess.

I'm definatly all out of it lately. I'm lacking my Wookie inspired sports related rantings. Anyway, I appologize to all three of my readers. I promise next week stories on the spring game, baseball team , the transfers and A NEW MOCK DRAFT. (It'll be Draft Week Baby you know that'll get me going.)

Quick Hits

Since we've officially delved into baseball season the stories are going to get a little briefer over the next six months since I doubt any body wants to read my daily recaps of each baseball season. If you do want individual Braves baseball recaps than I suggest one of my daily stops The Braves Journal.

So here are some quick bullet point style headlines.

M-Brave catcher Brian Speaking of the Braves they are off to a promising 3-0 start after dismantling the Phillies to start the season. Pitching has been the story as the three starting pitchers, John Smoltz, Tim Hudson and former M-Brave Chuck James, and three big gun relievers, Bob Wickman, RafealSoriano and Michael Gonzales have been dominate thus far. The offense star has been fromerMcCann who looks to become a perennial all star. Edgar Renterria and Chipper are also playing well. Kelly Johnson is well on his way to becoming the whipping boy of the season.

Other pro baseball talk; I think the Dice-K mania is getting a little out of hand these days. As intriguing as the gyroball is an all I'm not willing to crown him the Cy Young winner yet. He is who we thought he was. A high priced acquisition from Japan with a lot of hype. He'll probably have a solid season but lets wait to he does something a little more exciting than beat the Kansas City Royals before we crown him. BUT IF YOU WANT TO CROWN HIM THEN CROWN HIS ASS BUT HE IS WHO WE THOUGHT HE WAS!
The SEC is good. In fact the conference is just dominating college sports right now. Lets see the SEC has the Football and Basketball national champions in the Florida Gators. The also have the women's basketball champion Tennessee Lady Volunteers. The conference has some achievements going on in the last major sport (keep bragging about your gymnastics program Stanford) baseball as well. Currently seven SEC teams are ranked in the 25 in baseball.
The four Florida Junior also all declared for the NBA draft this week destroying any hope of a three peat. I'm surprised Tuearean Green left early because he'll be a second round pick. I think Corey Brewer goes in the top seven picks and Noah and Horford go in the top 16. I think Horford turns out to be a quality pro, Noah a role player who, like Dennis Rodman, is more famous for off the court antics and weird personality than actual play. Corey Brewer will be the best of the four. But its alright because Noah's boys back in Gainsville know how he's gonna do it all night.

I've said it before but Armintie Price is good. She deserved the Howell trophy over Jamont Gordon, Todd Abernathy and Trey Johnson.

As for the men's tourney this has been the most boring tourney ever with no upsets. So I'll continue it by saying all four 1 seeds make it for the first time ever. My canine companion declined to vote this time after Nevada was knocked out.
